PHONICS and READING
Approach to phonics and reading schemes
Phonics
Phonics is taught systematically to all pupils and, where appropriate, continues into Key Stage 2 to support those who require further development of their decoding skills. We use Pearson's Phonics Bug programme, which provides a structured and progressive approach to phonics teaching. Daily phonics lessons incorporate a range of oral, written, and interactive activities to develop pupils' phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, and confidence in reading.
Reading Scheme
Our core reading scheme is Pearson's Bug Club, which is used throughout the school to support the development of reading skills. This is supplemented by a wide range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and reference texts to promote reading for pleasure and broaden pupils' reading experiences.
All pupils have access to digital reading resources through the ActiveLearn and Phonics Bug platforms, enabling them to practise and develop their reading skills both in school and at home.
The reading scheme is organised into carefully structured colour bands that provide a progressive pathway for reading development. Pupils move through these bands at a pace appropriate to their individual progress. Decisions about progression are based on ongoing assessment of both decoding and comprehension skills, ensuring that pupils are reading books that are appropriately matched to their stage of development.
