Equal Opportunities

Statement of Intent

At Stanley St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School, we recognise the uniqueness of each person, young and old, all people are special and of worth in God’s eyes.

Stanley St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School understands that, under the Equality Act 2010, all schools have a duty to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation;
  • Advance equality between different groups;
  • Foster good relations between different groups; and
  • Promote mental health and wellbeing.

Our school’s overall values are underpinned by our statutory duties under the Equality Act 2010. We are dedicated to ensuring that every pupil receives an education that offers them the best chance at fulfilling their potential, and to promoting mental wellbeing amongst our pupils. We have developed this policy to provide a clear framework for how we will achieve our school’s aims.

Our school’s demographic state is directly linked to our overall aims for achieving equality. Specifically, we aim to:

  • To ensure the curriculum effectively represents the 9 protected characteristics which ensure equality for all.
  • To actively promote cultural development and fulfilment through a creative curriculum that enables all children to have a cultural awareness and appreciation of their own culture and that of others.

To achieve our aims, we will adopt the following methods:

  • Embedding equality within teaching and resources
  • Using key data indicators to understand the needs and characteristics of our school
  • Promoting community cohesion
  • Promoting parental engagement
  • Investing in regular staff training
  • Using key data, such as measures of wellbeing, to monitor the progress of pupils with protected characteristics
  • Regularly reviewing our equality policy to ensure it reflects current trends and issues

Equality objective statements:

Below are our Equality objectives statements, which have been updated in June 2025 to reflect the systems in place across school to support equality and inclusion for all:

Diversity and representation objective:

To continue to promote diversity and representation within our curriculum to ensure children have a better understanding of our world.

To achieve this objective, we plan to:

  • To continue to purchase a rich and diverse range of books representing different cultures and identities.
  • To ensure a diverse and wide range of representations of the world is used across the curriculum.
  • Explore diversity and representations through Collective Worship themes to raise awareness of them for our pupils and their families, which will in turn raise the profile of diversity within and across the school environment and wider community.
  • To ensure pupils have the opportunity to see how diverse the world is.

Inclusion objective:

To continue to promote the cultural understanding and awareness of different cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs within and beyond our school community.

To achieve this objective, we plan to:

  • Explore the protected characteristics through Collective Worship themes to raise awareness of them for our pupils and their families, which will in turn raise the profile of the protected characteristics within and across the school environment.
  • Deliver a high-quality curriculum which celebrates and embraces different beliefs and values from around the globe; this will be supplemented by Collective Worship themes.
  • Monitoring by leaders will review the representation of the protected characteristics within and across the curriculum.
  • Updates to governors (via Headteacher Reports) will focus on the protected characteristics and how they are represented across the school and the impact of this.
  • Provide opportunities for the school and its community to celebrate and recognise different cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs through events in and outside the curriculum, teaching and learning.
