Overview Year 1 and 2

Moving around a map using Earl

We have used Earl to move around our map we made in the classroom.

Geography

We have been looking at houses, villages, towns and cities and have looked at maps. The reception children built with stickle bricks and the year 1 and 2 children made models using duple and lego.

Patterns

The reception children have been looking at patterns during maths. They have made patterns using cubes, counters and by creating sounds and movement.

Smartest giant in town:

In literacy, we have been looking at the smartest giant in town so we dressed up using the items of clothing the giant bought in the story. Year 1 and 2s have been focusing on gone planning a story using a story mountain to then write their version of the smartest giant in town. The children have enjoyed thinking about a new name for their giant as well as thinking about how the giant got to the shop. We have had skipping, running, driving and so much more.

Taste testing:

We had a super lesson looking at taste. The children tried items that were sweet, sour, savoury and salty. The children had super discussions about the taste and why they liked different tastes.

Water colour autumn leaves:

Wow what amazing art work of sketch leaves and then we explored using water colours to blend colours together to create these incredible autumn colours.
Forest:

Children had a go at using the fire steels to make a fire worm for the fire pit. Children found this tricky as it takes a lot of strength, control and accuracy.

Music:

Children have enjoyed exploring the instruments.

Building and creating:

Wow we have been using our imaginations to build and create using loose parts.

The smartest Giant in town:

We have been looking at this book and made our own Giant with a choice of clothes. We then made a house for the Giant out of blocks.

Forest - using tools:

Children used the peeler to peel sticks in Forest school.

The children also learnt how to use the apple peeler as well.

People who help us:

Reception children have been discussing people who help us.

Music:

Moving to the pulse of the music using our hands and the parachute.

Introducing our new text: Café in the woods:

We went on an adventure down to the Eco garden to introduce our new text in the woodland since our story was about a cafe on the edge of some woods.

PE:

We have been practising throwing and catching in PE and colour recognition for our hoop game.

Our indoor quiet space:

Children enjoying our quiet space; sharing a story together.

Nature brushes:

Wow we had an incredible art session using the wonderful pieces of nature found for our brushes. The children said "they are better because they make different shapes".

Sentence soup:

We have made sentence soup to support the children's understanding of what is needed to make a sentence and what we can add as extra to make it even better such as adjectives.

Exploring 10:

We have been exploring the number 10; what it looks like, how to recognise when we have 10, what 1o is made up of and how many 1s are in 1 lot of 10.

Exploring nature for our Art:

We explored the Eco garden looking for inspiration for our art work. We looked at Andy Goldsworthy is a British Sculptor who has become know for making art from things he finds in the landscape. You can see some of our art work below:

Our amazing artwork.

Exploring the provision:

We have been exploring our indoor and outdoor provision. The children have enjoyed playing the dinosaurs, volcanoes and larva in the sand as well as exploring the effects of pouring in the water tray. Inside we have made our very own patchwork Elmer using out colour animals to make the coloured patches on Elmer. The children have also been enjoying the construction area building lots of amazing creations together.

Being Artists:

The children have enjoyed exploring the use of paint and being artists.

Outdoor learning:

We have been exploring the sand and water resources. We have had dinosaurs and volcanoes in the sand so lots of hiding dinosaurs and making eggs. In the water we have had marble run without the marbles to pour the water and notice what happens when we tip the marble run pieces up.
