DT
The intent of the Design and Technology curriculum at Stanley St Andrew's Church of England Primary School is to develop pupils' ability to design, make and evaluate purposeful products that solve real and relevant problems. Through practical and creative experiences, pupils develop technical knowledge, practical expertise, resilience and an understanding of how design and technology shapes daily life and the wider world.
We are developing the use of Kapow Primary Design and Technology curriculum as the foundation for our planning, learning is carefully sequenced across a mixed-age two-year curriculum cycle to ensure full National Curriculum coverage and clear progression for all pupils. Through this approach, pupils are supported to Know More, Remember More and Do More by building upon previous learning, revisiting key concepts and applying their knowledge and skills in increasingly challenging contexts.
We aim for pupils to learn progressively about structures, mechanisms and mechanical systems, textiles, cooking and nutrition and, at Key Stage 2, electrical systems. Pupils learn to select and use tools, equipment, materials and components safely and appropriately and to make increasingly informed design decisions. Through the design, make and evaluate process, pupils develop creativity, problem-solving skills, critical thinking and independence while gaining an appreciation of the impact of design and technology on the world around them.
Aims
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
• develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world;
• build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users;
• critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others;
• understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
