Geography
We inspire all children to flourish by sharing their individual light during a life of fullness within God’s love of all.
Policy Statement
Geography raises and answers questions about the natural and human worlds. It develops pupils’ knowledge of places, people, environments and processes at local, national and global scales. It also develops the geographical skills needed to collect, analyse, interpret and communicate geographical information, including through maps, fieldwork and appropriate digital technologies.
Our curriculum helps pupils understand their own locality, including Stanley village and the surrounding environment, while deliberately broadening their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Geography enables pupils to understand relationships between people, places and environments and to consider environmental change, sustainability and stewardship within our Christian ethos.
Aims
The aims of geography are to:
- develop contextual knowledge of globally significant places, including their defining physical and human characteristics;
- develop understanding of the processes that shape physical and human features and how these processes interact and change over time;
- develop competence in collecting, analysing and communicating geographical information;
- enable pupils to interpret maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs, geographical information systems and other geographical sources;
- develop fieldwork skills through observation, measurement, recording and presentation of geographical information;
- develop accurate geographical vocabulary and increasingly secure spatial understanding;
- help pupils compare places without stereotyping and understand cultural, environmental and economic diversity;
- encourage informed consideration of environmental issues, sustainability and responsible stewardship.
