Welcome to Maths
As a church school we believe that every person, every child, and every adult is unique and special with God given gifts and talents which is our job to nurture and cherish.
The Nature of Mathematics
Mathematics provides a way of viewing, describing and making sense of the world. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and many forms of employment.
At Stanley St Andrew’s, we believe all pupils can develop confidence and success in mathematics. Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by our school learning philosophy of "Know more, remember more, do more". We aim for pupils to Know More by securing mathematical knowledge and vocabulary, Think More by reasoning, making connections and explaining their understanding, and Do More by applying mathematics confidently to solve problems in school and beyond. This golden thread runs through all aspects of teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum design.
Teaching is designed to secure strong foundations, fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving. Pupils are supported to make connections between mathematical ideas and to use mathematics purposefully across the curriculum and in real-life contexts.
Aims and Objectives of Mathematics
In line with the National Curriculum, our mathematics curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and can recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language;
- solve problems by applying mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking problems into simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Through our "Know mre, remember more, do more" approach, pupils progressively build rich mathematical knowledge, develop increasingly sophisticated reasoning skills and apply their learning in a wide range of contexts. We want pupils to become mathematically fluent thinkers who can use their knowledge with confidence, accuracy and independence.
We aim to foster positive attitudes towards mathematics and enable pupils to become confident, resilient and increasingly independent mathematicians. Pupils are taught to explain their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary, select efficient strategies, estimate and check the reasonableness of answers, and make connections across number, calculation, measurement, geometry and statistics.
